TEXTILE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE YEAR 2023

The Textile Achievement of the Year Award is a recognition given to a significant action or activity in the field of textile art or design that had substantial socio-cultural impact in the previous calendar year. The award encompasses activities supporting education, publishing, and other aspects contributing to the development of the profession.

The grand series of anniversary events organized by the Estonian National Museum (ERM) to celebrate artist Anu Raud's 80th birthday offered visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the life's work and philosophy of one of Estonia's most beloved textile artists, Anu Raud.

The series commenced on May 10, 2023, with the exhibition "Retrospective" at the Heimtali Museum, offering a glimpse into the artist's life and work through photographs, memories, antique collecting expeditions, assignments given to students, and her books. Additionally, the Estonian National Museum (ERM) displayed rag rugs woven with traditional Estonian parish patterns and their designs, guided by Anu Raud herself, at the Heimtali Museum.

Next was the exhibition "Family Pictures: The Raud Family Art Collection" at the Estonian National Museum, which opened on May 17, 2023. The exhibition showcased Anu Raud's family art collection, consisting of nearly 200 works from the 20th century, including paintings, graphics, and sculptures accumulated over several generations.

The most significant part of the anniversary exhibition series was "Anu Raud: Patterns of Life," which opened on May 22, 2023, in the old round stable of Heimtali Manor. The exhibition provided an overview of Anu Raud's carpet creations, highlighting her unique style and deep connection to Estonian cultural heritage.

In addition to these three main exhibitions, several curator tours and special events took place throughout the anniversary year, including catalog presentations and the anniversary conference "Heritage Assets," held on October 6, 2023, at the Estonian National Museum's Heimtali Museum. The conference addressed a wide range of topics, from life at Käärikutalu and Heimtali Museum to the relationship between heritage and innovation. Among the speakers were renowned scholars, writers, and artists.

The event series was supported by several curators and artists, including Anu Raud herself, thereby adding a personal and profound dimension to the events. Anu Raud's anniversary year events highlighted the significance of her life's work and its impact on Estonian cultural heritage, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to get closer acquainted with the artist's creations and life philosophy.

The organizing team of the exhibition series included prominent individuals who contributed to the success of the events. The curators of the "Retrospective" exhibition were Tuuli Tubin McGinley, Anu Raud, and Ela Tomson, with Tuuli Tubin McGinley also serving as the designer. "Family Pictures: The Raud Family Art Collection" was curated by Reet Mark. The curators of "Anu Raud: Patterns of Life" were Anu Raud and Ene-Liis Semper, with Ene-Liis Semper as the designer, graphic designer Emma Eensalu, and producer Tuuli Tubin McGinley. The team included Laura Kipper, Reet Mark, Arvi Tragel, Lauri Tamm, Erkki Pärt, Pihel Prans, Artur Kasepuu, Emma Eensalu, Kristjan Raba, Aivi Jürgenson, Liis Lainemäe, Märt Puusta, Maire Kuningas, Ela Tomson, and Bart.ee OÜ.

The anniversary conference "Heritage Assets" was organized in collaboration with the Estonian National Museum's Heimtali Museum, the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy, and the Estonian Academy of Arts, where speakers such as Kertu Saks, Anu Raud, Kadri Tüür, Meelis Kihulane, Mari-Triin Kirs, Hendrik Relve, Valdur Mikita, Anu Kannike, Evar Saar, Aet Ollisaar, and Ave Matsin presented.
