Ahead of the local Home Café Days, the Kõrgessaare Library will once again host an exhibition introducing the work of Estonian textile artists, now for the third consecutive summer.

This time, visitors can explore an exhibition of cord rugs, presenting the graphic patterns of the traditional Mulgi coat.

The exhibition is inspired by the work of Anu Raud, who has described this approach as the “graphics of the Mulgi coat.” The technique draws inspiration from the traditional black woolen Mulgi coat, which was decorated with looped patterns made from red braided cord sewn onto the garment. According to folk belief, these red cord ornaments protected the wearer from evil.

In this so-called Mulgi coat graphics, the braided cord is replaced with cotton cord, which is used to create an image on a piece of fabric, resulting in a cord rug.

In the summer of 2024, Anu Raud led a workshop titled “From the Mulgi Coat to the Rug” in Heimtali as part of a creative camp organized for artists of the Estonian Textile Artists Association. During the workshop, textile artists learned the Mulgi coat graphics technique under her guidance. The workshop resulted in a diverse collection of cord rugs, which were first presented at the exhibition “Along the Thread” at the Heimtali Museum of the Estonian National Museum from October 2024 until March 2025.

A slightly revised and expanded selection from the same exhibition is now on view in Kõrgessaare throughout the month of August. In their cord rugs, the artists have depicted themes that resonate with summer life on Hiiumaa and with the Home Café Days that take place there in early August.
