On Friday, 28 November at 17:00, the annual exhibition of the Estonian Textile Artists Association, “Attention, Material!”, will open at Pallas Gallery.

This year’s annual exhibition is dedicated to the meaning and significance of material for the artist.

Material is the immediate and tangible substance that textile artists encounter in their daily practice. Yet it is more than that — material influences both practical and conceptual decisions throughout the entire creative process. Increasingly, material is also connected to values, knowledge, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The artists participating in the exhibition seek answers to questions such as: What material do I work with? Why? How important is the choice of material to me? What role does material play in the creation of the work?

Material is meaning. The story we tell begins with the choice of material. The meaning of the material, its state, its properties — all of this forms part of the narrative.

Material is value. The value and preciousness of material are becoming increasingly important topics. What is the resource from which yarn, fabric, or any other (textile) material is made? Where, and by whom, was it produced? What do we know about the material we work with? How do we use this resource? What new value do we give to the material through our creative work?

Material is character. Every material has its own qualities and character, which largely determine how and in which technique it can be used. Thickness, sheen, flexibility, smoothness, structure, durability — the list could be much longer.

Material is memory. Material carries knowledge of its maker, its previous user, or perhaps a long-lost manufacturer or workshop. Are we able to read this? Does that memory travel into the work and reach the viewer?
